How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

While undergoing laser hair removal, the laser will emit a beam of infrared light onto the skin. When the light hits the skin, it turns into heat and damages the hair follicles. This damage delays hair growth for extended periods of time, which is why it may take 6-10 treatments to get the desired effect.

What Machine is Used for Laser Hair Removal?

We use Cynosure Apogee Elite for laser hair removal. The Cynosure Apogee Elite contains two laser systems – a 755 nm Alexandrite laser and a high powered 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser – these are the most optimal wavelengths for:

  • Hair removal
  • Improvement of leg veins and varicosities

By utilizing two different wavelengths, the Apogee Elite laser can be used to treat patients with various types of skin and complexions.

This system also uses a double cooling technique, which uses the body’s natural cooling process in conjunction with a specifically engineered external cooling system to minimize patient discomfort during the treatment.

How to Prepare For Laser Hair Removal

When preparing for your laser hair removal treatment session, it is recommended to avoid the following activities:

  • Excessive sun exposure- Because laser hair removal treatments require the skin to be in a natural state, unaffected by an unnatural darkening of the skin, it is recommended that you minimize exposure to the sun. If this is difficult for you, you may apply a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen whenever you are in direct sunlight.
  • Bleaching, plucking or waxing the treatment area- This can disturb the hair follicle and affect the results of the treatment. It is recommended that you avoid bleaching, plucking and waxing for at least a few weeks before the treatment. You are still able to shave and are recommended to do so the day before the treatment.
  • Taking blood-thinning medications- Speak to your doctor about stopping your blood-thinning medications before the treatment, as they can cause the laser treatment to be more painful and irritating.
  • Having microdermabrasion, chemical peel, or another laser skin treatment within two weeks of appointment.
  • Using photosensitive medication, prescription of Benzoyl Peroxide or Retinoids (such as Retin-A or Renova)
  • Taking Accutane within 6 months of treatment.

What Happens After The Procedure?

It is normal to experience some side effects for a few hours after your laser hair removal procedure. Some people will experience swelling, redness, and discomfort in the treated area. It is important to keep the treated area out of direct sunlight and to follow any aftercare instructions that your provider gives you to minimize your side effects.
